Historia i znaczenie niezłomnego ukraińskiego bohatera

Bohater to najkrótsza profesja w historii.

William Rogers

Mowa o bohaterze narodowym Ukrainy - wolnym i sprawiedliwym wojowniku-patriocie Kozaku. To ten rodzaj teatru lalkowego, który jednoczy dwa dominujące kierunki teatralne - teatr obrzędowy, magiczny i teatr zabaw ludowych; organicznie łączy dwie biegunowo przeciwstawne siły - religijną i świecką1.

? Wielki ukraiński reżyser i reformator Łeś Kurbas wygłosił przemówienie przed premierą swojej słynnej inscenizacji Wertepu (8 stycznia 1919), w którym tak określił kluczowe i oryginalne elementy teatru wertepowego: Ukraińska szopka wypełniła niezwykle ciekawą kartę w historii naszego dramatu.

? Od nazwy stolicy Kozaków pochodzi drugie sceniczne imię lalkowego bohatera wertepu - Zaporożec. To silne odniesienie geograficzne miało wzbudzać w widzach szacunek i respekt przed potęgą kozackiej "stolicy".

Unosi ją do góry, a w zaciśniętej dłoni trzyma mocno buzdygan.

Nadszedł czas bohaterów - prawdziwych patriotów, którzy muszą stanąć przeciwko wielkiemu złu, Herodowi XXI wieku, przynoszącemu Ukrainie i jej mieszkańcom cierpienie i śmierć. Wielowiekowa historia ukraińskiego teatru wertepowego pokazuje, że Kozak zawsze triumfował, dokonując aktu zemsty i kończąc każde przedstawienie niezmiennymi słowami: "Piekło i wrogie zło zginie. Prawda wobec niesprawiedliwości zatriumfuje!".

Artykuł dedykuję lalkarzom, którzy chwycili za broń w wojnie rosyjsko-ukraińskiej 2022 roku...

The History and Relevance of Most Invincible Ukrainian Hero

"The hero is the shortest profession in the world."

William Rogers

In this article, however, I would dare to disagree with William Rogers, because we are talking about a hero who has a centuries-old tradition and has performed this role well for centuries. And today the whole world is watching increase of his popularity and urgent need to update this character in Ukrainian culture. We will talk about the national hero of Ukraine - a free and fair warrior-patriot Cossack. This hero is unconventional in every way. It is enough to start with the fact that he emerged and strengthened in such a truly non-standard and rather mysterious theatrical and aesthetic phenomenon of the past as a nativity scene (vertep). This kind of puppet theatre "unites two prevailing theatrical directions - ritual, magic and folk play theatre". It organically combines "two polar opposing forces - religious and secular"1. Strict literary canonical texts and irrepressible energy of folk improvisation live here on the same stage. This incompatible unity of opposing origins shaped Cossack's image in Ukrainian culture. The aim of this text will be the presentation of his puppetry representation in such national Ukrainian theatre as vertep.

? The great Ukrainian director and reformer Les Kurbas before the beginning of the staging of his famous dramatic performance Vertep (premiered on January 8, 1919) made a textbook speech in which he pointed out the key and original elements of the vertep theatre: "The Ukrainian Vertep is an extremely interesting page in the history of our drama and theatre. It was created by the people themselves based on a famous biblical story. How much folk humour there!". Kurbas underlined that this type of theatre "came out of the very masses of the people and was the expression of the will of the soul"2. Thus, Cossack, as one of the central characters in the vertep theatre, is the manifestation of the will of the Ukrainian soul. He is a direct "representative of the Ukrainian people", an "exponent of its volitionist aspirations"3.

? It should be noted that among the rich gallery of national puppet heroes of Europe, Cossack is one of the few characters who has a real historical prototype; even several generations of real prototypes - Ukrainian warriors. So, who is Cossack? What is his place in the history and culture of Ukraine?

Arch. Motanka, projekt | created by designer Daria Volokushyna

? First of all, it should be noted that Ukrainian Cossacks began to form by specific historical and cultural factors. At first, the runaway peasants, driven to despair by the pressure of the landlords, became the Cossacks. In search of a better life they set off to the wild steppe, well armed in advance in case they met the Tatars. By the mid-16th century they were already not runaway peasants, but well-organised units of Cossacks4. By that time the Ukrainian people associated the Cossack with the image of a people's defender, a source of justice and vengeance. The town of Zaporizhzhia (one of the most important strategic goals of the Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2022) became the Cossacks' geographical centre. A special military and social order with its special rules, law and honour system was gradually developing there. By the end of the 16th century the influence of Zaporizhzhia troops, consisting of warriors-Cossacks, spread over the populated part of Ukraine.

? It should be noted that the second "stage" name of the Cossack hero, by which he often appears in the texts of the vertep, is Zaporozhets. It is connected with the name of the city Zaporizhzhia. This strong geographical reference, reflected in the name of the hero, was to inspire respect and awe in the audience before the might of the Cossacks "capital". Sometimes a Cossack or a Zaporozhets was given a well-known male name - Maksym, thus indicating and honouring the glorious memory of a particular person, whose role in the history of Ukraine is undeniable. We are talking about Maksym Zalizniak, who led an uprising during the national liberation movement on the Right-bank Ukraine in the second half of the 18th century (which went down in history under the name of "koliivshchyna"). Maksym Zalizniak's name has become a "symbol of will and invincibility"5, which directly corresponds to the main dramaturgical functions of Cossack in the vertep. Cossack or Zaporozhets always expresses brave attitude of people to foreign oppressors. The impoverished people of Ukraine saw in this image not so much "an ideal past as a call to fight against the oppressors"6. For the Ukrainian viewer, Zaporozhets always symbolized the just warrior that comes out victorious.

? The heroism of the image of Cossack was so important and strong for Ukrainians that it was reflected and fixed in his external puppet image. Like the others in the vertep type of theatre, Cossack is represented by a rather modest puppet in its animation and plastic capabilities - the vertep puppet. But this puppet is endowed with a powerful figure: he is taller than the rest of the puppets. He is about 32 centimeters, while the height of the other puppets varied between 19 and 23 centimeters7. Cossack is dressed in a characteristic costume that corresponds to its historical era. He is dressed in bright red (or blue) trousers and a blue (or red) overcoat belted with a pink sash. The choice of the colour scheme is not at all accidental - dark blue is the colour of the night sky, a symbol of mystery, while red is the colour of blood and flames, a symbol of bellicosity. That is why the blue and red colour combination corresponds to the bellicose spirit of Zaporizhzhia Cossacks, their inclination for hidden, unexpected and rapid action in the battle. The Cossack's puppet wears a characteristic hairstyle - a shaved head with a "herring" (long strand of hair on the crown). His face is decorated with a typical for Cossack black mustache. The Cossack's gaze is always serious, though his speech is interspersed with many jokes and verbal anecdotes. Particularly noteworthy is the one hand position assigned to this hero. He lifts it up and holds the mace tightly in his clenched hand. "The upraised hand expresses the determination to stop the enemy, to protect the native land" and a mace is "a symbol of power", it supports his authority given by the people and the legitimacy of his actions"8.

? As is known from history, almost all heroes of European folk puppet comedies in Europe, such as Pulcinella, Polichinelle, Punch and others, have undergone a transformation, passing the way from the marionette to a more dynamic and expressive system of theatre puppet - hand puppet. Cossack, on the other hand, boasts a unique and pure "anatomical pedigree" - he was born as a vertep puppet and remains faithful to this system of puppet manipulation in versions of the vertep performances today. The vertep puppet has its own unique material and artistic anatomy. In the second half of the 20th century, it was recognized as a separate type of a theatrical puppet with a specific manipulation system. The base of the puppet is a wooden stick or an iron wire (rod) on which the "body" of the puppet is set. This rod or wire allows the puppet to be moved from underneath in special holes in the floor of a vertep chest. The limbs and head have no additional sources of manipulation. The puppeteer animates the puppet vertically, in line with its main axis - the wire. This shapes the specific style and character of the puppet's movements - schematic, choppy and dotted. The vertep puppet is "the most fixed, poorest for movement freedom ancient puppet system" among all of existing systems of puppet control (marionettes, hand puppet, rod, shadow puppets etc.)9. This has to do with the origins of the vertep puppet, namely the medieval tradition of unmoving figures demonstrated in Christmas panoramas in Christian churches. In order to diverse poses, gestures and actions, these figures were gradually received the ability to perform a simple action, such as tilting the head to worship the Christ Child or drawing hand to raise the gifts and so on. Keeping and preserving this medieval origins of the vertep puppet, nowadays Ukrainian puppeteers still describe this puppet as "sculpture that moves"10.

? Like folk puppet heroes in the gallery of European puppetry, such as Punch or Polichinellle, Cossack amuses the audience with his jokes, verbal disputes, brawls with other characters, and improvised shows (eg. hopak - Ukrainian folk dance). Cossack even, like his English counterpart Punch, defeats the Devil himself, striking him with his mace and adding these actions with sharp jokes. Nonetheless, Cossack's dramaturgical purpose and his role in the vertep set this hero apart from popular puppet characters.

? The vertep performance is divided into two parts, completely polar in their tone - the religious and the secular. The first part, the sacred part, is based on the biblical story of the birth of Jesus Christ, while the second part consists of short interludes, original pictures from the life of the Ukrainian people, and social or moral scenes. Each of these parts has the main character. In the biblical story, the important one is Herod, who is a representation of evil and arouses hatred. In the secular part of the vertep, the most important role is played by Zaporozhets, who is always the defender of the Christian faith and its spiritual values and embodies justice and righteous vengeance11. Although these heroes do not meet in open conflict (for they are divided by their belonging to two separate story orders), the very presence of two opposing forces in one theatrical space, on one "lower" floor of the vertep chest, transformed in the minds of Ukrainian audiences into a duel between good and evil. For Ukrainians, it was important to see on stage in the image of the Cossack an indestructible force capable of overpowering and defeating the evil King Herod. From the end of the 18th century throughout the 19th century, the image of King Herod in the Ukrainian consciousness reflected the cruelty of the rulers, censors and oppressors of the Russian Empire, and their predatory policies in Ukraine. The dramatic conflict of vertep gradually transformed from religious-historical to socio-political, which, in a folk interpretation, confirmed the idea of inevitable retribution on the evil king for his cruelty.

? Returning to the article's opening maxim which says "Hero is the shortest profession in the world", with all due respect to the author of these lines I would like to argue once again with this sentence. On February 24, 2022 Ukrainian Cossacks again raised their heads decorated not with "herrings" but with military helmets. These brave today warriors carry on their shoulders the history, the beauty, the greatness, and the independence of the Ukrainian nation. The Ukrainian Cossack of the 21st century is dressed not in a historical costume of the 18th century but in armored waistcoats of 4 and 5 levels of fire protection, he is armed not with a wooden mace, but with the latest weapons. The time has come for the heroes - true patriots of Ukraine, who must stand against the very evil - Herod of the 21st century, who brought suffering and death to Ukraine and its people. The centuries-old history of the Ukrainian vertep theatre shows that Cossack has always triumphed, performing an act of vengeance and concluding each performance with the unchangeable words: "Hell and hostile evil shall perish. In the face of injustice, the truth will prevail!".
